Bowing to the pressure of the state government, agitating
revenue officials and employees today called off their
week-long strike and promised to return to work from
tomorrow even though the government refused to meet their
demands.

With the slashing of beneficiary contribution by 50 per cent
in the Rs 1,280-crore World Bank-Aided Punjab Rural Water
Supply and Sanitation Project, nearly seven lakh Punjabs
rural households are expected to benefit to the tune of Rs
54 crore.

strike at Jalandhar today, the residents, whose works were
pending since long heaved a sigh of relief. The agitation
spearheaded by the revenue officials, who were seeking
justice for Tehsildar Maj GS Benipal (retd), continued for a
week.

head on collision between a tourist bus and a truck that
took place on a bridge over the Satluj in the wee hours

Small industries cry for
attention
Ludhiana, June 28
The Federation of Tiny and Small Industries of India has
demanded that the Central government should hold separate
pre-budget meetings with their representatives as was done
in earlier times (1991-2004). The members feel that the
government, by not holding meetings with small industries,
watched the interests of big corporates only while they
were left ignored.
Bank accused of committing
fraud
Jagraon, June 28
Residents of Bhundri village yesterday protested against a
bank for operating an account of a dead person. Activists of
the Bharti Kisan Union, Pendu Majdoor Union, and Inqulabi
Kender joined villagers in taking out a rally at Bhundri
village bus stand and later assembled in front of the
Bhundri branch of the UCO Bank to stage a protest.

Goods worth lakhs gutted in
Mohali
Mohali, June 28
Goods worth lakhs of rupees were gutted in a fire that broke
out in a readymade garments factory in the Industrial Area
here this morning. Though the exact cause of the fire could
not be ascertained, a watchman at the factory said the fire
broke out when an unidentified thief was trying to escape
after stealing the garments.

Indonesian Open champion Saina Nehwal said mental fatigue
got the better of her in the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold,
thus dashing her hopes for back-to-back titles on the
circuit. Buoyant after her Indonesian Open triumph, Saina
seemed on course for her second title of the month but her
surprise defeat at the hands of Chinese qualifier Xin Wang
in the quarterfinals in Malaysia ended her dream run in the
circuit. And Saina said it was due to mental weariness.
